The demand for distance learning has increased in the last two years, driven by the pandemic. And this educational modality tends to keep growing and at an accelerated pace for the next few years, according to a survey by the Census of Higher Education, carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Education. According to the survey, the number of students entering distance learning courses has increased significantly and is expected to exceed classroom attendance next year.
According to data presented by the Higher Education Census, between 2009 and 2019, the number of enrollments in distance learning courses increased by 378.9%. Another study carried out by the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Maintainers (ABMES) showed that the search for online courses grew by about 59% between 2020 and 2021.
The 11th edition of the Higher Education Map 2021, released by the Semesp Institute, revealed data on a growth of 9.8% in distance education in the first half of the year, taking into account only enrollments in private universities in the country. On the other hand, the numbers of face-to-face classes represented a drop of 8.9% in the same period.
